Alston - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty |
Alston sits at the crossroads of five historic trans-pennine routes and four of these
roads climb to around 2,000ft passing through breathtaking scenery. |
It is an ideal starting point from which to explore the Lake District, rural Northumberland,
Hadrians Wall, The Scottish Borders and the Durham Dales. |
It is the ideal walking country, with many footpaths criss-crossing the area; the views from
the top of Hartside Pass on the A686 are said to be the best in Britain. |
